Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin this morning announced Karen Bowling will become the next Cabinet Secretary of the Department of Health and Human resources. She will take the job July 1.
Bowling, a Wyoming County native and West Virginia University alumna, has worked as a healthcare administrator and nurse practitioner, and has held leadership positions in the West Virginia Hospital Association and other organizations, according to a press release from Tomblin’s office. Bowling also worked as Mountain State University’s dean of the school of health sciences. The school closed last year after losing its accreditation.
She will replace Acting Secretary Rocco Fucillo, who took office in July 2010 after former secretary Michael Lewis stepped down for health reasons.
Fucillo’s administration became embroiled in a controversy after he placed two DHHR lawyers on paid leave following a bid scandal.
“I’m pleased Karen has accepted this opportunity to serve the people of our state,” Tomblin said. “Karen’s commitment to the health and well being of her community has been evident throughout her career and her community involvement-including her volunteer work as a Family Nurse Practitioner for the W.Va. Health Right Clinic.”
