Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin officially made the call Monday for a special session Tuesday, following speculation he would take such action.
Tomblin was required by law to call for the session within 10 days of Saturday, when former delegate and Speaker of the House Rick Thompson resigned his post. Thompson will become the next cabinet secretary of the Department of Veterans Assistance, following the resignation of ex-Secretary Keith Gwinn for health reasons.
The House of Delegates meets at noon Tuesday to officially select its next leader. Although the race was heated at times, for now it appears House Judiciary Committee Chairman Tim Miley, D-Harrison, has the votes to be the next Speaker.
Friday the other leading contender, House Finance Committee Chairman Harry Keith White, D-Mingo, said it was time to unite the party behind Miley.
Democrats are expected to caucus in private Tuesday morning before officially nominating Miley during the special session.
Monday evening the Wayne County Democratic Executive Committee will send three names to Tomblin as potential replacements for Thompson. Tomblin’s expected to pick the replacement Tuesday, so that person can be sworn in during the special session.
