My story for today’s paper about local residents with family in Syria included some comments Rep. Nick Rahall, D-W.Va, made to MetroNews on Wednesday, supporting military intervention in that country. The Daily Mail requested comment from Rahall on the issue, but his spokeswoman Diane Luensmann wasn’t able to get us a statement until this afternoon.
Here’s the full text of Rahall’s statement:
“I do not want to see our Nation drawn into yet another costly, open-ended military conflict, however, the Syrian government’s use of chemical weapons demands response.
“It should be a justified, proportional strike against sites of high value from which this chemical warfare was launched. It has to be very limited in scope with no boots on the ground. I expect Syria’s ally, Iran, will be watching our reaction as it contemplates how far to push its nuclear weapons capabilities.
“With any decision to launch a U.S. military strike against Assad’s government, the President must make the case to Congress, the American People, and our allies and he must do so in a way that adheres to the Constitution and the law.”
