Here’s what happened in local government this week, Oct. 28 to Nov. 1:
COUNTY – The Kanawha County Commission was introduced to the new director and board president of Kanawha Valley Senior Services at its regular monthly meeting. The commission also discussed the sale of the Pratt water system, early voting for the special school/library levy election, its legislative agenda for the 2014 legislative session and heard an update about the status of the Biggert-Waters Act.
NITRO & ST. ALBANS – Following a ceremony attended by local and state officials, the new Dick Henderson Memorial Bridge bewteen Nitro and St. Albans opened to traffic. On Thursday evening, members of the public were permitted to walk across the bridge before Friday’s ceremony.

Also this week, our education reporter Shay Maunz wrote about the proposed excess levy’s impact on libraries in Nitro and South Charleston, which aren’t part of the county system, but will receive money from the levy; and the Kanawha County Solid Waste Authority is looking for volunteers for America Recycles Day on Nov. 15.
In other news, the one-year anniversary of Hurricane Sandy. As an example of the ongoing relief efforts, one Webster County couple is just now moving into their new home after their old house was crushed by a falling tree. I’ve also written a small recap of Sandy’s effects in West Virginia last year.
And, a very cool visual – the new iFITT24 location in downtown Charleston opened Thursday in the location of the infamous Impulse nightclub. In June, we did a story as owner Jeff Charles was in the process of renovating the building. It’s been a complete 180 in that spot from before and after.
