Lots of people have taken issue with Oxyana, the new documentary about Oceana’s struggles with prescription drugs. Some 200 people recently showed up for a town hall meeting about the film, many saying it was an inaccurate portrayal of their Wyoming County hamlet.
I haven’t seen it yet, but the director, Sean Dunne, appears to be saying on the film’s website that the “vast majority” of Oceana residents are addicts. The vast majority? What does that mean? Eighty percent? Ninety percent? He doesn’t say.
Kudos to anyone who calls attention to the problem of prescription drug abuse. But facts, not hype, are what’s needed.
