A White House official Friday declined to support a proposal that would put all hydrocodone drugs in the same controlled substances category as oxycodone. House and Senate lawmakers have introduced bills to reclassify hydrocodone mixes like Vicodin and Lortab as drugs with a high potential for abuse. The bills also would increase trafficking penalties and require a prescription except in emergencies.
Hydrocodone is the most widely prescribed drug in the U.S. and the most abused opioid, according to the Drug Enforcement Administration. It’s barely used elsewhere in the world, according to the DEA.
