Looks like Conference USA worked pretty quickly in filling the spots left from East Carolina and Tulane’s departure.
(Western Kentucky looked like a contender as well, and a Tennessean story even included them among the replacements. Either that was a typo, or C-USA isn’t done. I think the conference will stop with FAU and MTSU.)
I’ve seen and heard some Marshall fans angry that the team now sits in a conference that is pulling its new membership from the Sun Belt, but this is Marshall’s reality. If the Big East wanted the Herd, it had numerous opportunities to extend an invitation.
If C-USA remains Marshall’s home, it’s not a bad setup. The Herd likely will sit in a division with both MTSU and FAU. If Charlotte, Old Dominion and FIU join them, that’s three easy-to-get-to games and a guaranteed annual trip to Florida. That should be a huge recruiting bump in South Florida for Doc Holliday, who can now tell prospects that their families can drive to watch them play once a year.
I think that’ll close the book on Realignmageddon for C-USA for now. But, as we’ve seen already, the only thing we know for sure is that nothing is for sure.
