What better way to get your mind off the aftermath of Tax Day than to stop by here?
The defense had another pretty good day Tuesday, even making what I thought was the play of the day. During team drills, linebacker Billy Mitchell had a pretty interception, snagging a Rakeem Cato pass over his shoulder. He wasn’t the only defender with a nice play. Jermaine Holmes and Armonze Daniel each had a sack against the second-team offense, and Daniel came back later with a PBU.
Alex Bazzie sacked Cato late in team drills on one play, then Stefan Houston and Derek Mitchell swarmed him on the next play. Also, a Gunnar Holcombe pass bounced off two defenders’ hands, but found its way into the bread basket of A.J. Leggett for an interception.
Holcombe made a heck of a throw at one point, dropping the ball into the hands of Chris Alston Jr. while Alston was in stride, sprinting down the near sideline. True to what offensive coordinator Bill Legg said Saturday, Holcombe and Blake Frohnapfel got a lot of work under center Tuesday. In fact, there was a lot of mixing and matching of personnel. At one point, Cato had Shawney Kersey and Jack Gammon flanked to his left. I wouldn’t read too much into it. If there’s any time you can experiment, it’s the spring.
Check charlestondailymail.com later tonight or Wednesday’s print edition of the Daily Mail for a practice notebook including, among other things, some recruiting philosophies from Herd recruiting coordinator Todd Hartley. The website 247Sports.com recently named him one of the nation’s 10 recruiters on the rise.
