The ACC schools announced today that they signed a grant of rights deal that reportedly extends through the 2026-27 season. What that means is that, for the length of the deal, if an ACC school jumps to another conference, the ACC continues to hold that school’s media rights, including revenue. That removes any carrot for any ACC team wanting to defect.
The ACC was one of two major conferences, the SEC being the other, without a grant of rights deal. (And really, who’s crazy enough to leave the SEC?) That left the ACC vulnerable to conferences like the Big 12 or Big Ten, which still might have been considering expansion.
So other conferences can’t poach the ACC, which means the ACC likely won’t go poaching the American Athletic Conference to replenish itself, which means the American likely won’t go poaching Conference USA to replenish itself. So all the Super Happy Fun Time Realignment Jamboree and Bake Sale might finally be over and everyone knows who his neighbor will for the next decade and a half.
Anyone bummed that its over?
