OK, so I didn’t see every bit of practice on Tuesday. There was the small matter of the men’s basketball team’s best player leaving the team. But I did see a decent chunk of it. Among the highlights …
– Shawney Kersey had another really nice day after another Saturday of struggles. The first pass I saw was his catch in traffic on a deep Blake Frohnapfel throw, where he slipped past two DBs for a touchdown. He came back later with another catch in a crowd and ended Tuesday’s practice with another scoring catch as Frohnapfel was scrambling around in the red zone.
Kersey has shown plenty of talent this spring, but it just seems that his worst days come during the scrimmages. Coach Doc Holliday isn’t worried though, saying new WR Coach Mike Furrey will be working hard with him before the 2013 season kicks off.
– Kevin Grooms was at practice, but not in pads. He was doing a lot of running, though. Not sure if it was punishment for his Sunday arrest, but it wouldn’t surprise me. Of the teams I’ve covered in my time, that’s often the punishment for misdemeanors.
– Kudos to Craig Wilkins, who took a pretty strong hit from Taj Letman on a throw down the sideline and still came up with the ball.
– Gunnar Holcombe and Chris Alston Jr. hooked up for a nice touchdown pass, Holcombe finding Alston in the back corner of the end zone for a score.
This was the last full pads practice before Saturday’s Green-White game. The Herd will work in shorts on Thursday in preparation for that final scrimmage. Check out charlestondailymail.com later tonight or the print edition of Wednesday’s Daily Mail for a story on kicker Justin Haig and punter Tyler Williams, both healing up from some back issues and trying to become more consistent on the field.
