Soooo, remember when I was saying that the new bowl system will create a distinct college football middle class? That Power 5 conference teams will try to exclusively play each other in the postseason?
Here’s your first example. Brett McMurphy is reporting on ESPN.com that in finalizing its bowl slate, the SEC will exclusively play other Power 5 teams in its top eight or nine bowls. That shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise. SEC commissioner Mike Slive said at SEC spring meetings that he “probably, but not exclusively” preferred to play Power 5 teams in bowls.
Compare that to the 2013 SEC bowl tie-in list, where three of the 10 bowls are SEC vs. Group of 5 teams. The good ol’ boys in the south have the toniest address in town, and they ain’t leavin’ the country club anytime soon.
