Will the Bulldogs be running away from defenders and behind ball carriers? Or might they be running for touchdowns?
Look, y’all, let’s all be honest here. I know there’s the “any given day, any given team” stuff, but an FCS team that needed to come back against a fellow FCS foe versus a team that thumped an FBS school 52-14 last week?
(Though, considering Miami (Ohio)’s whiz-bang performance this week versus Kentucky, that win may not do much for strength of schedule.)
If all goes as planned, the starters will get their stats, the backups will get playing time, Gardner-Webb will get a paycheck and the Herd starts 2-0 for the first time since 1999. But there were seven FBS schools who thought that last week and ended up sorely disappointed, so you never know.
Among the injured/not dressed: DB Keith Baxter, LB Billy Mitchell, and OLs Chris Huhn, Cody Collins and Sandley Jean-Felix. That brings up an important point: If Marshall can go the season with redshirting those freshman O-linemen, especially Jean-Felix, whom coaches were very high on this preseason, that would be a big boost to future lines. Marshall loses Gage Niemeyer, Alex Schooler, Jordan Jeffries and Garrett Scott after this year.
Coach Doc Holliday said Remi Watson would be back in uniform for this week and, sure enough, he is. Kevin Grooms is in uniform, too, though I would be surprised to see much out of him this week. If he’s not absolutely 100 percent, I wouldn’t put him anywhere near the field unless completely necessary. He’s much more essential to the Herd next week at Ohio than he is this week against Gardner-Webb.
That should be everything for now. Hopefully there’s no surprise statement released from the AD like there have been at some schools we know of. If not, find me in the Twitterverse. And, as always …
Happy Guarantee Game Day, y’all.
