Rakeem Cato — Remember this guy? It was well known that the Marshall quarterback still could throw touchdowns in bunches. His five-TD game against Tulsa was his third of the season and second in the last three games. But he also showed he could still gain yards like crazy, too. His 456 yards versus the Golden Hurricane weren’t just his best total of the year. They were the best in his three seasons as the Herd’s quarterback. And on top of that, he led the Herd on his second fourth-quarter game-winning drive of the year. It doesn’t look like Cato’s about to hand the mantle of Conference USA’s best quarterback to anyone else anytime soon.
Christian Milstead — The FAU senior defensive back made it three straight games with at least one interception, picking off two, including one for a 61-yard touchdown in a 41-7 win over Southern Mississippi. He personifies what the Owls defense needs to be as the season closes. And if it stays solid against New Mexico State and FIU, Florida Atlantic could be on its way to a surprising bowl berth.
FIU Defense — UTEP scored a total of 21 points in its last three games. The Miners scored 33 in a win over the Panthers and gained 327 yards on the ground to do it. Now FIU faces Marshall, the top scoring offense in Conference USA. But, hey, at least they live in Miami. So they’ve got that goin’ for them, which is nice.
Louisiana Tech Offense — Tony Petersen left his job as Marshall co-offensive coordinator for the chance to call his own plays at LTU. He probably wishes he was able to take a few of his offensive weapons from Huntington, too. The Bulldogs have shown they can score against horrible competition (Southern Miss, FIU, UTEP). Against anyone stouter, it’s a different story. Tech scored just 14 points in a loss to Rice. The Bulldogs need to win their last two games to become bowl eligible, but those games come against Tulsa and UTSA.
