The Kanawha County Spay and Neuter Task Force, along with the Kanawha Charleston Animal Shelter, will have a candlelight service at 6:30 p.m. Saturday.
The vigil will be at the shelter on Greenbrier Street.
The service is in recognition of National Homeless Animals Day marked all over the country on the third Saturday in August.
There will be a large display of collars on the shelter lawn. The collars represent each animal that was put to sleep at the shelter during the 2011-2012 fiscal year. This year, there will be a total of 6,368 collars on display.
Participants will read stories, recite poems and sing about the animals that died. A representative from the rescue group Dog Bless is also scheduled to speak at the vigil.
