When I adopted Sadie, I took her home to the house I’d bought in Charleston’s East End. It had a lovely little “secret garden” back yard that was fenced and puppy ready. The spacious front porch was great for both of us to sit on and watch the neighborhood. Kanawha River Boulevard Walk was only a block away which was great for puppy leash training and getting to know each other on long walks. It was perfect.
Then several years later, I sold the house never dreaming a rental for the two of us while we considered our next move in life would be so difficult to find. It seemed every FOR RENT ad said NO PETS and some even followed that with NO EXCEPTIONS! After months of looking and seeing very run- down apartments that allowed dogs, exorbitant deposit fees and impossible rules, we found our new home, but it came with a big price…a purchase price. Yep…we had to buy another house.
So I’m looking for stories from both landlords and tenants with pets. I’d like to know what the situation is out there for responsible pet parents (like me of course!) looking for a nice place to rent with their dog or cat.
What has your rental experience in Charleston and surrounding areas been like when you have a pet? Have you found it difficultin like we did? How did you find your solution? Were their weight restrictions? Were dogs not allowed and the door held open for cats? What are some impossible if not ridiculous conditions you were expected to meet to get a rental?
And landlords, let me hear from you too. Have you ruled against pets because of a past bad experience? Did something terrible happen to your property from renting to a pet owner? Are you worried about liability from things such as dog bites or property destruction? Do you own pet friendly rentals? What kind of rules do you have if you rent to pets? If you don’t allow pet rentals, what if anything would make you change your mind?
Please respond tin the comments here, or on FACEBOOK, or by e-mail I promise total anoniminity if your story is used in a future blog. Thanks.
