When I wrote my first book, THE DOG DIET, What My Dog Taught Me About Shedding Pounds, Licking Stress and Getting a New Leash on Life, (HCI, Books, 2006) no one was really talking about how our dogs can help us lose weight, get healthier, and are just all around good for us. There has been a lot of progress in the last seven years and many studies to back up the idea that exercising with you dog is not only good for you, it’s good for her. Obesity doesn’t just occur in people; overweight dogs are on the rise as well.
Dogs become overweight for all the same reasons people do; lack of exercise, too many calories, and even depression. Your dog’s weight problem must be handled by you and in doing so; you can develop some healthy habits for both of you. I have found it so much easier to control Sadie’s calories than my own at times, but having your dog as your dieting and fitness partner doubles your success at achieving fitness goals. Since my book was released, I’ve met other authors who write about dogs and health. My friend Peggy Frezon has a brand new book with some tried and true tactics as well as some innovations to get you and Fido fit.
Peggy’s book, The Dieting with my Dog Guide to Weight Loss and Maintenance, (Brooks Press, 2013) is a great guide to get out and exercise with your dog, lose some weight, and maintain you healthy new weight and habits. You’ll find incentives to develop healthy routines and create better eating habits for the whole family including the dog. There are exercises developed specifically for you and your dog to do together. The exercises were created by the K-9-Fit Club by the founder Tricia Montgomery, a terrific program of fitness and health for people and dogs. http://k9fitclub.com/
Sadie and I even have a few pages in the new book about keeping the pounds off after you get in shape…no easy job as we all know.
