You are looking live at the student section inside the Coliseum, where it’s not too cold outside to make the media walk halfway around the building to get in the red gate, as opposed to the green gate closest to the parking lot. Never mind nobody checks bags at either gate. Just go to the red gate, briskly if you’re cold.
Wait … where was I? Oh, yes. Those white sheets of paper are the Maniac Musings and on normal days I’d take one and share it with you. If I took one today there would only be like 17 left for the students. Clearly, they’re not looking for a big turnout tonight.
And that makes two intriguing over/unders tonight:
1) WVU, a game below .500 with two home losses already, is an 11.5 point favorite against TCU, which is .500 and loser of five straight, each in the Big 12. That’s a lot of points for a team that doesn’t have a great offense playing against a team that doesn’t give you the normal amount of opportunities.
2) Attendance: 7,200?
You make the call …
And we’re done here. The crowd and the points were under as WVU wins 71-50 and Harris ends a mostly perfect night by missing a 3 that the crowd wanted him to take.
Henderson has warmed up, and probably loosened up, here in the second half. He helps a lot if he’s right,.
Kilcili cuts and gets a pass under the rim, waits and scores. TCU turns it over for the 17th time. And this one is over. WVU up 60-44 with 5:47 to go.
Missed 3 by that TCU guy who shouldn’t be out there, Noreen gets caught down low but hits a cutting Staten for a layup. That ought to do it. … but Noreen has to sit with four fouls. TCU misses the front end of the one-and-one and loses the offensive rebound out of bounds.
This started early in the half, but TCU can’t stick on Harris when he’s cutting. He gets free again and gets two more free throws and makes jut the second. 56-44…
Also, Harris makes both his freebies.
Huggins … I don’t know. The timeout ended, everyone sat and he marched hastily down the line clapping at the Nique/Miles area.
Four out, with Kilicli as the big, but Harris draws a foul getting held as he cuts. He has 13 points on 4-for-4/1-for-1/4-for-6.
Murray fouls in the post and McKinney makes both free throws. Hello, deadline!
And Staten, who just missed two free throws, loses a ball out of bounds off his foot.
Oh, of course, an and-one for TCU, courtesy a Brown foul under the hoop. It’s 53-40 with 8:36 to go …
I have him for six points, a rebounds, two assists and a steal. He had eight points all season before cleaning up Saturday and getting seven late points.
Aaron Brown: 3-for-3.
Huggins will take a timeout to manage and perhaps even micromanage here, but he’s sick about Anderson getting inside again and again.
Yet it’s still cozy 49-35 lead. Cozy unless you bet a pepperoni roll on that 11.5.
TCU now 7 for 9 this half, but with six more turnovers. WVU has four baskets and four free throws.
WVU’s last three-game home losing streak, which was also on the line tonight? Last season.
Oh, hey, gang. That 11.5 seems safe!
And now Trent is coaching. Two timeouts in the past 90 seconds. Can’t take ‘em with you, T.
Screw you, Coliseum. Terrible mash-up of “Jump Around” that features the characters of Sesame Street. I’m trying hard to be positive and professional tonight and this is really testing me.
One thing TCU does admirably well: Avoid that five seconds call. All this dribbling and not one yet.
Anderson, showing signs …
Sincerely can’t tell is TCU tried bank shots or if that’s just inaccuracy.
Also, how’s Bardo? I dig his shirt in person.
I think the only drama left here is how close TCU gets. Then again, last game I theorized WVU would make a run at Purdue because that, too, had been the trend.
By the way, this game is why I don’t do “The Good and the Bad…” during basketball season.
TCU might be terrible. I’m leaning that way. Anderson was just clean picked by Kilicli t half court and Kilicli dribbled 47 feet for a left-handed dunk.
And Trent Johnson will NOT call a timeout.
Ah, Chris Zurcher. He’ll always remember the time he got two fouls at the Coliseum.
Wither Tommie McCune, you ask? This:
This is just hard to watch, but I’m curious why TCU is having such an issue with WVU’s token pressure — it’s just pressure until the ball crosses the time line. It seems to be hurrying the Horned Frogs up more than you think it should
I don’t know what WVU is doing on offense and defense, but it’s very sloppy and lacks organization. TCU is getting decent looks but isn’t good enough to do anything with them.
Brown sits to a nice hand. That was a good run for him. Seriously.
Driving inside and flipping it to someone under the basket.
Quietly, TCU is starting to make hay inside.
Gary Browne has gotten up twice to come in and then been told to sit down. We’re at the under 8 timeout and WVU leads 21-15.
Aaron Brown: 2-for-2.
An air ball on a layup!
And Brown is due sooner or later. I keep hearing about how he’s shooting well in practice.
Might not see Gary Browne again tonight. Silly foul on an open layup earns a seat in favor of Aaron Brown and the wrath of Huggins. Humphrey gets a mouthful too and is replaced by Terry Henderson.
Four… and that one was the worst, but Hinds lobbed it to nobody for giveaway.
The defense is giving TCU fits, though. Three straight turnovers, steals and baskets for WVU.
… Gary Browne fouls 40 feet from the basket.
TCU junks it up with a zone to slow it down more, but Nique scores on put-back. WVU presses and speeds TCU up to where it has to take a timeout trapped at the mid-court line.
Humphrey for Noreen, and my story is just shot, but WVU is going small here. From the looks of it, WVU was basically going with open offense early with Noreen masquerading as a guard.
Very nice defense by WVU for 34 seconds, but it is a 35-second shot clock and Hinds fouls on pump fake 3-point shot with the buzzer sounding. Timeout with the Horned frogs up 6-4 … and this is bad WVU tonight at the start.
Huggins is only NOW talking to Kilicli. Quite a gap.
And now Kilicli gets stuffed under the basket and TCU gets possession. Nique in for Kilicli. That was very eventful.
Kilicli cuts nicely and just loses the ball. He looks for a foul and the loose ball near him goes to TCU and the Horned frogs make a second 3 to go up 6-4.
Kilicli’s third shot had no chance but he got fouled. First free throw hits back iron and rolls in. Second hits similar spot and bounces off.
Hickman has already commented that Huggins is going to Kilicli to spite my story. Observers nodded their heads.
Kilicli now 0-for-2 on open 1-footers.
Tremendous start: Deniz backs in and has a clean look at a right-handed hook and jumps and forces a lefty push shot, I suppose. It misses and the loose ball goes to Gary Browne, who throws it through Harris.
Let’s recalibrate the attendance: O/U of 6,400.
Also, I’m 1,600 words into the Dana Holgorsen True Life Story and I’d call that a dent. Might be a special section.
P.S. It’s fantastic.
There’s not 7,200 people here. And that sucks because there’s no secondary heat source. Starting lineup for WVU: Hinds, Browne, Harris, Noreen and Kilicli. Hmm.
