Friday Feedback

Welcome to the Friday Feedback, which turned back the clock this morning. I went over to WVU’s pro day at the indoor practice facility because Charles Sims and Will Clarke are probably both getting drafted in May and Darwin Cook has a chance to hook on somewhere, if not late in the draft, than soon thereafter as a free agent. It gets hard to get in touch with those guys as the draft approaches.

And then there were two people I had to put eyes on. One was Howard Jones, the Shepherd University star who wowed a lot of folks as a top performer at the combine. (He ran a 4.45 40, I was told, today.)

The other was Noel Devine. If you’ve only been here a while, you should know we used to spend a lot of time just watching Noel’s high school highlights and then his college highlights. I’m happy to report that the aura still shrouds him. He’s still jacked. He’s still stupid fast. And people still watch him walk by and then turn to the closest person and say, “Hey, that’s Noel Devine.”

And why not? He put 225 pounds up 24 times and ripped off a 10 foot, 8 inch broad jump. Then he ran a few 40s — they didn’t give us times, or any other useful information, which is dumb because we’re invited to cover it, but I saw people time him at 4.34 and 4.42 — and zipped through the cone drills and caught some passes and, oh, did I mention he has a stomach bug and was puking all morning?

Devine, who is now 26 years old,  is making another run at the NFL. He’s healthy — healthier than he was at his 2010 pro day when he had a bum toe and ankle — and says he has his heart and mind right after being a little humbled the past few years. He hopes the game has changed, too, and will accept a person of his skill and, yes, size. If not, his rights still belong to the Montreal Alouettes.

It was a fun chat I’ll turn into a nice story, but I really do hope the guy gets the happy ending he now seeks.

Onto the Feedback. As always, comments appear as posted. In other words, rampage.

Here’s a vote for an NCAA bracket contest.

Unrelated, but the women’s team kind of got screwed. Got a 2 seed and will have to play AT the 7 seed in the 2nd round. If they win that road game, they get Louisville AT Louisville in the Sweet 16.

That’s a joke.

It is a joke … and it isn’t. The first two rounds aren’t chosen for the women’s tournament like they are for the men’s. The women’s tournament goes to hotbeds where fans will flock and it’s almost exclusively on campus. Schools submit bids, a few years in advance, I think, and the tournament organizers try to make sense of the sites and matchups. So to some extent, WVU can’t do much about it, but, man, sooner or later the organizers have to do something to make life easier on the Mountaineers. I mean, back-to-back road games would be a bit much for a No. 2 seed, no?

Maybe WVU and Morgantown need to start bidding to be a host site.

I believe they’ve tried, to no avail.

Carey really can’t complain until the NCAA changes the venue format (which they won’t because of the $$)

If all hold serve . . .

#2 Baylor has to play #1 ND on their home court

#1 UConn gets first crack at #4 Nebraska on their home court (most likely UConn eliminates Nebraska’s home court advantage but the consolation prize for #2 or #3 in that bracket is to face UConn)

#1 South Carolina really gets no respect having to play #2 Stanford in their place if they hold serve.

We get potentially two teams – #7 LSU and then #3 Louisville – better odds than Baylor having to face #1 ND in the shadows of the Golden Dome?

Actually, here’s the good news. The top 16 teams next season can host first- and second-round games. Significant format change there that actually takes a swing at income potential.

I hope I don’t encounter you on the highway while you repair some posting with your cellphone. In fact, I’d prefer your not doing that in the future. We kind of need you alive and, we’ve come to be somewhat fond of you. We would hate to have to scrape you up off of the Mileground.

Go Mounties

I hope tht Drew and I are wrong; but I believe our season is over. Playing the Hoyas in McDonough Gymnasium just about cinches it in my opinion. Oh well, there’s always 2015, or 2016, or 2020,kkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkk There was a really really bad stretch in the game where: (1) Eron had a jumper blocked, the blocker ran down and got a layup with Eron trailing less than enthusiastically, and (2) Eron had a layup blocked and then didn’t fight through a screen and allowed a long three pointer on the ensuing possession.

If things don’t go right for him on offense, he turns off the switch on everything else. He’s not a good rebounder or defender as it is, so he becomes non-existent on the court during times his offense is not clicking.

As a previous poster mentioned, we need Eron, Terry, Remi, Devin and Nathan to improve as much between this year and next as Juwan did.

I think Brandon Watkins is the only guy besides Juwan who actually got better as the season went on.

I mean, that happened to Harris a lot and it was increasingly problematic because teams were taking him away on offense. I can forgive rebounding deficiencies because he’s a 6-2 guard who is pretty slight and gets pinballed around a bit. But he can’t give up as many points as he gets and he can’t be what he was late in the season, when he was giving up much more than he was getting. That bothered me because it’s something someone as good as Harris ought to be able to manage. It just never got better and I don’t think you can ignore how that played a part in the 3-7 finish. And I think Huggins tired of it somewhat and sat Harris more in the final few games than he might have earlier.

Staten’s transformation was nothing short of magical. Hope everyone else discovers his special alchemy of extremely hard work this off season.

I’ll admit it: Wholly unexpected. I didn’t think he had that sort or turnaround in him. And I think the best thing that can happen to the 2014-15 team is to have Staten come back, not because of Staten the player, but Staten the example. There are some people on this team who saw Staten’s maniacal drive in the offseason and saw him outpace them by such a great margin during the season that they have no choice but to mimic what they see this offseason.

netbros said:

Need for Harris and Henderson to improve as much between soph. and junior season as Staten did. That would make for an electric threesome.

The bigs HAVE to hit the weight room hard during off season. Can you imagine Devin Williams with legs strong enough to elevate 3-4 more inches? The good news – at least with more bodies next year there will be more fouls to give.

I hope too that Huggins gets more involved. No way of knowing what goes on behind the scenes, but it sure seems like he is more tolerant of errors that he was the first few years he was back in Morgantown. I know all the guys are his friends, but maybe it’s time to shake up the staff some. No one is coming to look for head coaches from his staff.

Well, what struck me was how Huggins sounded less than pleased with the strength and conditioning of this team. I have to think that will get looked at. Agreed with the Williams observation. And I think Harris can get his head right and that Henderson has to do the same. As for other improvements, well, I don’t know about that. What’s Gary Browne going to do? I feel about him the way I feel about Dibo. Each is what he is. I think Adrian is probably a year away still. But so what? Dibo, Browne and Adrian are bench players who can do their thing when they come in. I think you’re in a tough spot when you ask those two to play 25-plus minutes and score, pass, guard and rebound. That’s not their game. If you ask them to come in for a few minutes here and there and score some points and not embarrass themselves in other areas, you’re OK. If Dibo or Adrian gets hot, ride it. (That said, I think Adrian has a pretty optimistic ceiling. I just don’t think he’ll get there by November. You’ll be happy if I’m wrong, though.

Since 4/1/2010, WVU FB/BB have combined for just 2 postseason wins. Both came vs. Clemson (2011 NCAA tourney, 2012 Orange).

0-10 combined against everybody else. (BB: Duke ’10, UConn ’11, Kentucky ’11, Marquette ’12, Gonzaga ’12, Tx Tech ’13, Texas ’14, Gtown ’14. FB: NC State ’10, Cuse ’11.)

I like your coffee mug comparison, Mike, and I agree with that metaphor. It ain’t totally fixed, as evidenced by the record and the defense, but it’s a step forward after the previous three seasons were backward steps from the prior seasons.

For next year, Eron, Devin, and Brandon need to hit the weight room. This doesn’t feel write to say with Devin, who’s built like a brickhouse already, but he needs some lift, and I hope that’s fixable. The addition of more muscle *should* help Eron on offense and defense, but part of his defensive struggles are a commitment issue. I think Nathan Adrian will be better because he is a hustle guy with what seems a high basketball IQ for a freshman.

I have more questions about Macon than Holton, perhaps because we’ve at least heard updates about Holton from practice. I’m assuming the incoming freshmen won’t be contributing much and might even red shirt, but I’m only guessing.

After what we saw from Juwan this year, I’m pretty sure you can count on him coming back as a three-point threat.

…assuming Staten returns, right? I put that at 50-50, though I’m concerned how the story has changed from “I’ll be in grad school next fall, why do you ask?” to “I’m putting my name in the draft and if I have a chance to realize my dreams, I’ll do it.” I suspect he’s found out a little bit about himself in the time between the two. Pay no attention to anyone who says he struggled against Texas and Georgetown and can’t possibly leave for the NBA. It’s about much, much more than that. As for Holton, who knows. He hasn’t been ale to do the practice and weight room things Holton has been able to do. My expectatsions are low, at least to start.

1) I started to write that I thought Huggins has started the fix but then it dawned on me that without the dramatic improvement by Staten that this year could have been almost as bad as last year (aside from last years attitude issues that you addressed). Still I believe that this year was a step forward.

2) We must get stronger play from whatever bigs we have around the basket. Not only do we need to get bigger and stronger but they must play a little more athletically (possible?). You would hope that Williams and Watkins improve with the offseason program. Also that Holton and hopefully Macon can give you another layer plus add to the athleticism mentioned above. I feel that Dibo could be a key for next year. I think the 1st half last night showed how beneficial it can be when a big can step to the foul line area and make a mid range rumper.

3) Based solely on the limited information we have seen about him this year I believe that he will be a solid contributor and give us some additional scoring punch while improving our rebounding and back end defense. I tend not to expect to much from a “1st year guy” in Huggins’ system (see every JC/transfer player he has had, including Dibo) but hopefully the year practicing and observing will really help him.

Overall I am hopeful that next year will see a 20 win season and we will be back in the reall tourney.

All good points, but the first and last are pretty sobering.

Bobby Heenan said:

1. Yes, he fixed it. Your coffee mug analogy is perfect. It still leaks though, and sometimes the glue that holds together the pieces picks up dog hair.

2. Must fix issue – I don’t know if I can only pick one, so I’m hedging here…Harris defense, finding a shot blocker (or at least someone that can alter one) inside, getting Williams some creative ways to get shots up inside or understand his limitations in there (no amount of squat rack time or calf lifts is going to improve his lift in any meaningful way in my opinion – see Jones, Kevin).

3. Holton starts. (Staten, Harris, Henderson, Holton, Williams). The big question mark I have for him is his 3-point shooting. He took ~3 per game his freshman year, but only shot 19%. Will he be able to shoot 3′s and get his man out of the lane so Staten has more freedom? Unfortunately, I don’t expect him to be the shot blocker I think we need inside, but I expect him to be a significant improvement over Williams as an inside defender. That will give us two VERY good rebounders out there.

Good point about 3-point history and trajectory. It is something of an unknown, but he took a lot of 3s in juco. Was he wonderfully defended? Probably not. But, yeah, the threat has to exist to make things run easier for everyone else. As for shot blocking, his length will help and, typically, very good rebounders are good help defenders. WVU’s secondary defense was lacking this season.

Mike, I’m curious how you feel about “being done.” Obviously you don’t have to travel now for six months, but perhaps you enjoy being elbowed in crowded airports, and having midnight conversations with hotel shuttle bus drivers.

You still have plenty to cover, including women’s basketball and baseball and spring football, but then begins the slow, slow off-season for every sport.

Presumably you miss the games. After all, that’s why we all tune in.

So how does off-season compare to in-season for you?

I keep busy, but I have fewer, uh, diversions in the offseason. I don’t think it’s any secret I do better when I have time to use. I have time now. Women’s basketball is over soon and baseball isn’t a big draw in the newspaper.  From August until now I’ve become aware or been made aware of things I wanted to pursue. Now I roll up my sleeves.

Vingle Tweets Holton will lead in scoring and rebounding next year.

And everyone’s right on Harris (and Henderson, too, especially post-sickness), he needs to put on some strength so he can shove and separate to get his shot. Right now, he’s a classic Indianan set-me-a-screen jump-shooter, a la Steve Alford. Beautiful shot, if uncontested.

Come to think of it, he’s he Paul Millard of jump-shooting.

Oh, man. Where was that Paul Millard line all season? And enjoy the weekend!

  1. Noel Devine always looks impressive as all hell…until he faces players who are at his level

He couldn’t cut it in the CFL, yet many believe he can be an impact player in the NFL.

I’m skeptical, to say the least.

I’m a little surprised and concerned to hear Staten’s 50/50 on returning next year. I know we’re only estimating, but I can’t imagine, with all the kids leaving early this year, that he’d be better than a second round pick, and I’ve been operating under the assumption that the true purpose of the evaluation papers were to see what he can do to improve his draft stock next year. Obviously he hopes for better news in said evaluation, but I hope he makes a good decision, whatever it is. And I hope like hell that he’s back.

Wow. Buzz Williams, stylin’ and profilin’ his way down to Blacksburg. Kind of a Frank Martinesque move there. I just don’t think that’s a program meant for basketball, but he could prove me wrong.

The basketball team won’t improve until the defense improves. Period. Huggs has never been a top level recruiter, but his teams have historically been very good defensively. Defense turns into offense. Throw in some better rebounding and this team will be fine. Easier said than done though…..

Not a Buzz Williams fan, but a good move on his part. Marquette basketball was non-existent this year and probably will be be going forward as we get further away from the old Big East.

Buzz in the ACC with his sideline act – a good fit! Dude is an as*, but can coach. Plus, by going to VA Tech, it adds more fuel to the fire. Most WVU fans already hate the guy! Babcock already doing good things as AD down there.

Score! The coveted Kicker Position in FF!

I didn’t go to the football team’s practice in Wheeling, but I actually feel kind of bad for this Skyler Howard kid. Fans were propping him up like he was some kind of savior, and then now everyone is saying he “sucked” in the open practice which was his sixth ever practice and apparently was posting on twitter apologizing for his “rough day.” It’s March 22! We have a long way to go, and it was always unrealistic to prop this poor kid into Johnny Football (who, it must be noted, was not Texas A&M’s starting QB coming out of the spring).

I also saw where Dawson said they were looking at runningbacks who could also play slot receiver. I don’t think this means they will have those runningbacks split wide running deep routes, but I’d expect to see Smallwood and Garrison maybe used like they used Charles Sims, with Shel and Dreamius more pure traditional backs. That’s the strongest unit on the team if they use it right.

Bit of an indictment of the Big 12 with no teams yet in the sweet sixteen, and Iowa State and Baylor the only hopes of any making it there.
Greg Anthony is a huge upgrade on primary color commentary over Kellogg.

  8. MontanaEer says:

Well, Baylor and ISU made it. UVA is the only ACC rep. Remember when the ACC was to basketball what the SEC is now to football? Cycles. Plus, the ACC watered itself down, because of football.
