It’s starting to make some sense

The second thing that stands out about WVU’s newest basketball recruit, Billydee Williams, is that his playing time and production were both inconsistent bordering on erratic.

It’s alarming, and whether it’s fair or not, it’s concerning when you’re dealing with a junior college player. There’s a perception attached to a kid who toils at that level, and if you’re not careful it can lead you to presumptuous conclusion.

What we can fairly say about Williams is that he was capable of scoring and even rebounding when he was able to play a healthy share of minutes. What we can’t say yet is why the PT seesawed the way it did — and that has to be question No. 1 when we meet, right?

Maybe not, because I’m starting to get a more clear picture about Williams as a guy who was new to his team last year, who played with a bunch of veterans, who played for a pretty good coach who really knows what he’s doing and who is perhaps only guilty of fitting in on a good squad that made the NJCAA quarterfinals last season for a reason.

Williams is the sixth member of last season’s SPC team headed to a four-year program. The others are point guard Sekou Harris (South Dakota), shooting guard Roderick Lawrence (Mississippi), forward Ryan Martin (Tennessee Tech), forward Malik Nichols (Hofstra) and center Michael Karena (Wright State).

So…………we get a bench player from a group of maybes who transferred into those “power house” programs. Looks promising.

  2. smeer says:

did he play only shooting guard or did he also play the three spot?

I ask because at 2, he was up against a vet headed to Mississippi, but both forwards are headed to lesser programs.

I know there are other factors, but I would like to know from who he took his minutes. They play three guards?

Sorry, must have missed it. What was the first thing?

It’s not making sense to me…

  5. Neil Cohen says:

He did well in their last game, a 1-pt loss in the quarterfinals. He was 4-5 from the 3 (and 2-4 from the foul line), scoring 14 pts and 5 rebounds in 14 minutes. He may have played more, but he had 4 fouls.

I, for one, welcome Lando to the team with open arms.

    Does that make Huggy Vader??

Or … He’s the next Gordon Malone

  8. KeatonsCorner says:

What also contributed to his minutes limitation at the SF position was 2 high-rated freshmen JUCO players on his team. They are both being pursued by BCS-level programs, but won’t make the articles right now because they still have another year left to play.

Folks want to doubt him because he didn’t play 25+ minutes a game. Nevertheless, he produced. And produced well. I’d urge someone to tally up his points-per-40 minutes numbers, or his Player Efficiency Rating…….. Impressive

Honestly…..there’s a reason (reality or perception) a guy with size and scoring ability is available this late in the year. Hopefully, a change of scenery will be good for him, but if he’s one who pouts when he’s yelled at, he will sit the end of the bench and not play….at all.

What I want to know is if his life will be whole at WVU.

We can’t get top recruits to come.

We can’t get the projects we’ve developed to stay.

Reaching is the next logical step.

  13. jtmountaineer says:

If he becomes the star we hope he’ll be, perhaps they’ll replace the Coliseum hardwood with mahogany.

We know she has a hop-step. (“The Wiz.”)

I’m sorry, but that’s not definitive. If you go by “The Wiz,” Michael Jackson has a big nose.

Sorry my Sheik-ky friend, HAD a big nose!

  18. smeer says:

    had a very shiny nose?
